St Valentine’s Day or St Dwynwen’s Day?

Blog text

This time of year is always one for romantics. But do you opt for the general British Valentines Day (February 14th) or did you celebrate in Welsh style with our own traditional equivalent, St Dwynwen’s Day? (January 25th)

The original story is rather tragic for our national day of lovers; Dwynwen was a 5th-century damsel in distress whose cruel father prevented her from marrying her true love. The original tale also involves a magical fish man being turned into a block of ice but it also signifies a day of good luck for couples.

Perhaps we should celebrate both? After all, it seems a little stingy to devote just one day a year to true love. You could spring a surprise and treat your other half to a great meal or even a romantic break in Wales? We have amazing food to offer and themed rooms to offer that are sure to wow your other half!

In the meantime, anyone interested in the romantic and wedding traditions of Wales might enjoy our previous blog on the topic.

The best of South Wales Wedding Fairs (28th January 2018, 11am to 4pm)

Blog text

Our all-singing wedding fairs are always lively and enlightening gatherings to get you in the mood for romance. These events are a great chance to ask all those tricky questions, meet the experts and hand-pick the very best wedding suppliers for your special day. Furthermore, the day also promises to be an opportunity to ask any nagging questions you have and get the grand tour of one of the most beautiful wedding venues in South Wales.

We begin what is sure to be an inspiring look at Welsh weddings from 11am-4pm on January 28th. Entry is free and every bride-to-be will receive a goodie bag, while our bar will be open too should you fancy a spot of lunch. New and returning guests simply must have a look at our recent refurbished Llewellyn Room and Bridal Suite!  See our Welsh wedding fairs section for further details.

Pancake Day with Added Spice! (13th February)

“Why don’t we do this more often?” comes the refrain from just about every household in Britain every Shrove Tuesday. We don’t tend to make a huge fuss about this food occasion, which can quickly fall… well, flat as a pancake? Hence this year we thought we’d have some fun and add a little culinary creativity into the mix. Watch this space and our Facebook page for more details.

The Return of Six Nations Rugby (3rd Feb to 17th March)

To any self-respecting Welsh sports fan, this clash of rugby’s not-so-friendly neighbours is more than just a game. Can Wales turn it up a notch this season and return to the top of the pile? The only certainty is that we will enjoy finding out. Wales have a nice opening match too, taking on Scotland at the Principality Stadium (3rd February 2018). Enjoy each match and ease a little tension in our hotel bar. Come on you reds!

St Davids Day

St David’s Day (1st March)

Our national day (Dydd G?yl Dewi, to give the occasion its proper Welsh moniker), is always a cause for celebration here in Bridgend. It is a big bash to raise a toast to the heritage and culture of Wales. In our case, we are very proud of the hotel and its part in the local community, not to mention the history of Bridgend and South Wales. Why not join us at Court Colman Manor for this special occasion and sample a special St David’s Day meal together, complete with delicious and distinctly Welsh ingredients on offer in our Bokhara Brasserie. More news to come on our Facebook Page as we build up to the day itself...
